Wherry Housing Association’s – Energy Wise Project
The Trustees agreed to funding this project in April 2011 for a period of one year.
The aim of the ENERGY WISE project is to significantly reduce levels of fuel poverty amongst Wherry Housing Association’s most vulnerable tenants by addressing each of the following contributory factors.
- Energy efficiency of the home
- Fuel costs
- Household income
Who will benefit
This project will target Wherry Housing’s most vulnerable tenants who are at most risk from the effects of fuel poverty. They will identify their most ‘at risk’ tenancies
- Older tenants – 18% of their residents are aged over 60
- Families with young children – 19% of their families have a child under 10
- Tenants with a disability – 31% of their customers class themselves as living with a disability
- Single tenant households on low income – 51% of their homes are single person households
Tenants will be engaged in the project through direct mailing and referrals through their Neighbourhood and Income teams.
How this will be achieved
- One to One energy advice sessions.
- Sustainable Energy Packs
- ENERGY WISE Community Advice sessions
Project outputs and outcomes
By the end of year 2:
- 600 vulnerable social housing tenants will have received a one to one home energy audit which will reduce their risk of fuel poverty
- 600 vulnerable social housing tenants will have received practical support to reduce their energy bills by an average of 15% with the provision of ENERGY WISE sustainability packs.
- 200 low income households will have received benefits and debt management advice and guidance and report that they are more financially stable.
- 25 community groups will have received advice and guidance on energy saving measures and report that they are better informed about energy saving measures in the home.
The long term impact of this project will be to help people to make sustainable reductions in their energy consumption and maximise their income through benefits, budgeting and debt management advice thus reducing their risk of exposure to the negative effects of fuel poverty.
