Green Doctor - Wales and Milton Keynes
Funding for this project with the environmental charity, Groundwork UK, was agreed by the Trustees in July 2011. The funding will be for the first year of the project
Groundwork North Wales will deliver the project in 2 key locations; Wrexham County Borough and the County of Gwynedd. To ensure their project supports only the most fuel deprived households, the communities within these locations have been identified for inclusion
in the Green Doctor programme due to their ranking in the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD 2008).
Groundwork Thames Valley have chosen to focus the Green Doctor programme in Bedford, specifically the deprived ward of Cauldwell, and Milton Keynes, in particular the most deprived areas including Conniburrow, Fishermead, Coffee Hall & Downs Barn.
The Green Doctor programme aims to tackle fuel poverty amongst vulnerable residents by providing home visit services in deprived neighbourhoods. Trained staff offer free one to one advice and support to encourage energy efficiency and address other environmental issues in the home.
The priority is to reduce household energy costs of individuals on benefits or on a low incomes, and who live in properties that a
re particularly poor in terms of energy efficiency.
This will include individuals who:
- Live in properties with a SAP rating of 35 or under, as well as general ‘hard to treat’ properties.
- Households living in properties with prepayment meters
- Tenants who are most at risk in the neediest households such as disabled, the elderly
- Low-income families.
As part of the delivery targeted at the fuel poor, the programme will also look at fuel debt and what help can be given to clients to address this problem through simple measures such as understanding their bills, and fuel tariff.
